Marriage Counseling

Most couples don’t come to counseling because they don’t care. They come because they care deeply and feel stuck. They start counseling because they don’t want to give up on their marriage or relationship. They come because something important feels off, and they don’t know how to fix it on their own.

Couple holding each other's hands during marriage counseling

I’m Diana Aten, a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, Career Counselor, and Certified Life Coach in Meridian Idaho. After 20 years of working with couples, I’ve seen how even loving relationships can get caught in painful patterns: the same arguments on repeat, feeling unheard, growing distance, or wondering how you became roommate instead of partners. Often I find that it’s not that partners don’t love each other; it’s that they can’t FIND each other in all the noise and stressors of their lives. And if an affair happens or other violations of sacred trust, it can add another level of devastation and pain where the ability to trust again can seem impossible.

Why Marriage Counseling?

Because you’re probably at the point where all your best efforts and intentions aren’t working, and you need experienced help. Marriage counseling offers a supportive, neutral space where both partners can slow things down and come together to feel seen, heard, understood, valued, and respected. Together, we look at the patterns that keep pulling you into the same conflicts and work toward healthier ways of communicating and connecting, especially when emotions run high or trust has been broken.

What to Expect in Couples Counseling

Couples counseling is an active, collaborative process. In our sessions, I work with both partners to create a space that feels respectful, balanced, and focused on progress. My job is not to “take sides” but to ensure that both voices are heard and that we work towards mutual understanding and lasting solutions.

You can expect:

  • A therapist who is engaged, honest, and experienced
  • Help identifying the deeper issues beneath recurring conflicts
  • Skills to break the cycle of repeated arguments
  • Tools to improve communication and manage disagreements more effectively
  • Support in rebuilding emotional safety, trust, and connection
  • Guidance that’s practical and relevant to your real life, not just the therapy room
  • Help in navigating major life transitions or challenges, such as parenting, career challenges, retirement, or health issues
